What they are: Brass tactile studs are warning domes machined from solid brass bar, Ø35 mm and 4.5 mm high, installed on a 50 mm grid to mark hazards and decision points. Brass gives a warm gold colour that complements stone, timber and heritage finishes. MetalX supplies them with a stem for drill-and-fix installation, a poly sleeve, or 3M self-adhesive backing, with concentric ring or carborundum-insert tops. In some markets the same product is called a warning button, tactile button or tactile dome; the terms are interchangeable.

Overview

Architects specify brass tactile studs when the floor is part of the design statement: a hotel lobby in cream marble, a museum gallery in oak, a heritage railway station being restored. Brass is warm, machines to a crisp pattern and develops a soft patina that suits traditional interiors. MetalX machines each stud from solid brass bar in Mumbai, so the colour runs through the whole stud and cannot wear off as a plating would.

Functionally the studs are identical to our stainless steel tactile studs: Ø35 mm top, 4.5 mm height, 50 mm grid, with concentric rings for slip resistance or a carborundum insert for the highest wet grip.

Caring for brass

Untreated brass tarnishes slowly to a darker bronze tone. Many clients prefer this natural patina; others specify a clear lacquer or ask us to polish periodically. Brass is also naturally antimicrobial, which is one reason it is chosen in healthcare interiors. For outdoor coastal sites, or where zero maintenance is essential, consider gold finish (PVD) stainless steel studs, which give a similar colour with stainless steel corrosion resistance.

Brass or stainless steel?

What brass brings to a floor

Brass is a copper-zinc alloy with a colour that sits between gold and bronze. Set into cream marble, sandstone or oak it looks like an intentional inlay rather than a safety fitting, which is why interior designers ask for it in hotels, galleries, banks and restored railway stations. The alloy is also naturally antimicrobial, a point in its favour in healthcare and hospitality interiors, and it machines to a crisper pattern than stainless steel. What it does not do is stay bright without attention: brass darkens to a bronze patina, quickly in humid or salty air and slowly in a dry, cleaned interior.

Natural, lacquered or PVD-protected?

  • Natural polished brass: the standard finish. Develops a patina over months; can be re-polished at any time.
  • Clear lacquer: holds the bright finish for several years in an interior; the lacquer eventually wears on the crown and is renewed.
  • Gold on stainless steel instead: if the design wants gold outdoors or with no maintenance, specify our PVD gold-finish studs, which are stainless steel underneath.

Top pattern and fixing

Concentric rings are standard and give good grip. The carborundum insert adds a black abrasive centre, which both improves wet slip resistance and solves the contrast problem that gold-toned studs can have on pale marble. Stem fixing into drilled holes with epoxy is used on stone and concrete; the poly-sleeve version speeds installation on rougher substrates; the 3M self-adhesive version lets a hotel retrofit a stair landing overnight without drilling its marble.

How many studs do you need?

Brass studs sit on the same 50 mm grid as all our studs: 400 per square metre and 240 per running metre of a 600 mm-deep field. A grand staircase 3 m wide needs about 720 studs at the top and 720 at the bottom.

What affects the price

  1. Material: brass bar costs more than stainless steel bar, so brass studs carry a premium of roughly 30–50% over SS 304.
  2. Top pattern: concentric ring is the base; carborundum insert adds an operation.
  3. Finish: natural polish is standard; lacquering adds a process.
  4. Fixing: stem, poly sleeve or 3M tape.
  5. Quantity and destination.

Mistakes we see with brass studs

  • Brass outdoors near the sea. It tarnishes within months. Use SS 316 or PVD gold.
  • Acidic tile cleaners. They strip brass. Use neutral cleaners and tell the facilities team.
  • Gold studs on cream marble with no contrast check. Specify carborundum inserts or a contrasting border.
  • Mortar and grout left on the studs. Mask them during the rest of the build.
  • Mixing brass studs with stainless steel strips in one field of view. Match the metal; we make brass strips and tiles too.

Installation

Identical to stainless steel studs: mark the 50 mm grid with the template, drill, clean, fill with epoxy and press the stud home; or peel the 3M liner and press onto a clean, smooth floor. Protect polished brass from mortar and acid cleaners during construction.

Compliance and standards

Brass studs share the Ø35 mm, 4.5 mm, 50 mm-grid warning geometry of AS/NZS 1428.4.1 and ISO 23599, and are available in an ADA truncated-dome profile. Note that gold-toned studs on pale stone may not achieve the luminance contrast some standards require; we can supply carborundum-insert tops in black or a contrasting surround detail to satisfy contrast requirements.

Frequently asked questions about brass tactile studs

Do brass tactile studs tarnish?

Untreated brass slowly develops a darker patina, especially outdoors or in humid air. Indoors with normal cleaning the change is gradual and often welcomed. A clear lacquer or PVD protection can be applied if the bright finish must be maintained.

Are brass tactile studs suitable for outdoor use?

They can be used outdoors in covered or dry climates, but for coastal, wet or high-pollution sites we recommend stainless steel or PVD gold-finish stainless steel, which keep their colour without maintenance.

What sizes are available?

Standard Ø35 mm top, 4.5 mm height, laid at 50 mm centres. Ø25 mm and Ø30 mm studs and custom stem lengths can be machined to order.

Is brass slip resistant?

Yes. The concentric ring pattern is machined into the top for grip. For the highest wet slip resistance choose the carborundum-insert type.

Can brass studs be self-adhesive?

Yes. We supply brass studs with factory-applied 3M double-sided tape for drill-free installation on tile, stone and terrazzo.

How does brass compare with gold PVD stainless steel?

Both look gold. Solid brass has a warmer, natural tone and patina; PVD gold on stainless steel is harder, brighter and fully corrosion resistant. Solid brass is usually specified for heritage interiors, PVD for modern exteriors and transport.

Are tactile studs the same as warning buttons?

Yes. Warning buttons, tactile buttons, tactile domes and truncated domes are regional names for the same product: a raised stud fixed to the floor in a grid to warn of a hazard. MetalX brass tactile studs are supplied under any of these names to the same specification.

How much more do brass tactile studs cost than stainless steel?

Typically 30–50% more than SS 304 studs of the same size, because brass bar is more expensive. Send quantities for an exact quotation.

How do I clean brass tactile studs?

With neutral floor cleaners and normal machine cleaning. Avoid acidic tile cleaners, which strip brass. Re-polish or re-lacquer if a bright finish is required after several years.

Do brass studs meet contrast requirements on light floors?

Gold-toned brass on cream marble may not achieve the luminance contrast some standards require. Specify the carborundum-insert type, which has a black centre, or a contrasting border around the field.

Can I get brass strips and tiles to match the studs?

Yes. Brass directional strips and 300 × 300 mm brass tiles are machined from the same alloy with the same finish.
