What they are: Self-adhesive tactile studs are warning domes with a factory-applied 3M double-sided acrylic foam tape on the underside instead of a stem. They are Ø35 mm and 4.5 mm high, install without drilling, dust or noise, and reach full bond strength in about 72 hours. MetalX supplies them in SS 304 / 316, brass, aluminium and PU with concentric ring, diamond, carborundum and PVD tops. In some markets the same product is called a warning button, tactile button or tactile dome; the terms are interchangeable.

Many accessibility upgrades happen in buildings that are already open: stations, hospitals, malls and offices where drilling is noisy, dusty and disruptive. Self-adhesive tactile studs let a two-person crew install a complete warning field during a quiet period with nothing more than a cleaning cloth, the positioning template and a rubber mallet. There is no curing time before the floor can be walked on, although the bond continues to strengthen for three days.
MetalX applies a die-cut 3M acrylic foam tape to the flat underside of each stud in the factory, protected by a peel-off liner. The tape is the same family used to bond exterior trim on vehicles and cladding panels, and it tolerates floor cleaning chemicals, temperature swings and UV exposure. The stud itself is identical to our stem-fixed version, so the tactile signal underfoot is unchanged.
The tape needs a smooth, dense, clean surface to bond to. Vitrified tiles, polished granite and marble, terrazzo, epoxy floors, sealed concrete and metal all give excellent results. On rough, porous or dusty concrete, on carpet, or where standing water is constant, we recommend stem-fixed studs instead, or a hybrid: self-adhesive tape plus a small bead of construction adhesive.
Every stud below carries factory-applied 3M tape. Other top patterns and PVD colours can be produced to order.








The tape on our studs is a 3M double-sided acrylic foam tape, die-cut to the exact base of the stud and applied in the factory under pressure. Acrylic foam tapes are used to bond exterior trim to cars and cladding panels to buildings; they work by wetting out onto a dense surface and then continuing to cure for about three days. The foam core takes up small irregularities and thermal movement so the bond is not broken by a trolley wheel or a hot afternoon. What the tape cannot do is bond to dust, wax, moisture or a crumbly surface, which is why almost every failure we have ever been asked about traces back to preparation rather than the tape.

Every material in our range can be supplied with 3M tape, so the choice is about the interior rather than the fixing. Stainless steel for stations, hospitals and most commercial floors; brass or PVD gold for hotels and heritage buildings; anodised aluminium for large budget-driven areas; polyurethane in six colours where contrast against a pale or grey floor is the priority. The stud profile is the same in each, so a project can use different materials in different zones.
Studs sit on a 50 mm grid: 400 per square metre, 240 per running metre of a 600 mm-deep field. A two-person crew installs 400–600 self-adhesive studs an hour on prepared tile, so a stair landing top and bottom, about 1,000 studs, is a two-hour job with no dust, no drilling and no closure. The same job with drilled studs takes two days and a hoarding.
On tiled floors the installed cost is usually 40–60% below drill-and-fix once labour is counted.

Clean the floor with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry. Position the fibreboard template, peel the liner from each stud, place it in the template hole and press down firmly for 5 seconds; a rubber mallet helps. Remove the template and repeat. Keep the area free of wet cleaning for 24 hours; full bond strength develops in 72 hours. Floor temperature should be between 10 °C and 40 °C during installation.
Self-adhesive studs use the same Ø35 mm, 4.5 mm, 50 mm-grid geometry as our stem studs, aligning with AS/NZS 1428.4.1 and ISO 23599 warning patterns; an ADA truncated-dome profile is available. Adhesive fixing is accepted by all major standards, which govern the surface geometry and contrast rather than the fixing method. For exterior or wet locations, confirm with us that the substrate suits adhesive fixing.
Yes, on the right surface. 3M acrylic foam tape bonds permanently to clean, smooth, dense floors such as vitrified tile, polished stone, terrazzo and sealed concrete. Failures almost always come from dust, moisture or unsealed porous substrates, which is why surface preparation matters more than the tape.
Immediately for foot traffic. Avoid wet mopping for 24 hours; full bond strength is reached after about 72 hours at room temperature.
They can be used on smooth exterior surfaces such as sealed concrete and granite in covered areas. For open pavements with rain, dust and freeze-thaw cycles we recommend stem-fixed studs set in epoxy.
Yes. Warm the stud with a heat gun, prise it up and remove tape residue with a citrus or isopropyl cleaner. This makes them popular for leased premises and temporary layouts.

A two-person crew typically installs 400–600 studs per hour on prepared tile, so 3,000–4,000 studs in a working day including setting out.
It depends on material, top pattern, finish, quantity and destination. PU is the lowest cost and brass the highest; the 3M tape adds a small amount per stud but reduces installed cost by 40–60% on tiled floors.
Only after the wax or crystalliser is stripped and the surface is cleaned with isopropyl alcohol. Test a few studs and check them after 72 hours before installing the full field.
Between 10 °C and 40 °C. Below 10 °C the adhesive will not wet out; above 40 °C handle the studs quickly and avoid direct sunlight on the tape.
