Porcelain and Ceramic Tactile Tiles – Vitrified Tactile Paving

Overview

Where a floor is being tiled anyway, porcelain tactile tiles are the most integrated solution: the tiler lays them in the same adhesive bed as the rest of the floor, and the tactile domes or bars become part of the finished surface with no separate fixing operation. The vitrified body is dense, colour-fast, frost resistant and resistant to cleaning chemicals, and the moulded surface texture gives good slip resistance wet and dry.

Limitations

Porcelain tiles cannot be retrofitted onto an existing floor without removing tiles, and cut edges around columns need care. For retrofit projects choose self-adhesive studs or surface-mounted stainless steel tiles.

How porcelain tactile tiles differ from surface-mounted indicators

Every other product in our range sits on top of a finished floor. A porcelain tactile tile is the floor: the tiler lays it in the same adhesive bed as the surrounding tiles, at the same time, with the same tools, and grouts it with the rest. There is no plate edge, no screw head and no separate trade on site. The domes or bars are moulded into a full-body vitrified tile, so the colour goes right through and a chipped dome shows the same colour underneath.

Choosing the colour

Because the whole tile is coloured, contrast is easy: yellow on grey concourse tile is the most common combination in India; black or terracotta on ivory floors; grey or ivory on dark stone. Match the surrounding tile format so joints line up, and keep the tactile tile in the same thickness as the field tile so the domes rise 4–5 mm above the finished floor.

How many tiles do you need?

A 600 mm-deep warning field is two rows of 300 mm tiles: 6.7 tiles per running metre. A 300 mm guiding path is 3.3 bar tiles per metre. Order 3–5% extra for cuts and breakages, as with any floor tile, and order the whole quantity from one batch to avoid shade variation.

What affects the price

1. Colour and batch size: standard colours ship faster; project colours carry a minimum run.
2. Format: 300 × 300 mm is standard; other formats are made to order.
3. Quantity and freight: tiles are heavy and travel by sea for export; allow for this in the programme.

Mistakes we see with porcelain tactile tiles

• Tactile tile thicker or thinner than the field tile. Match thickness so the domes, not the tile edge, are what the foot feels.
• Joints out of line. Set out the tactile field first and work the floor tiles to it.
• Cut tiles leaving a single row of domes. Plan the field to whole tiles, or finish with loose studs.
• Different batches in one field. Shade variation is visible in a tactile field; order from one batch.
• Spot bedding. Use a full adhesive bed so domes are supported and do not crack under load.
