What they are: Gold finish tactile studs are warning domes, Ø35 mm and 4.5 mm high, with a gold-coloured surface produced either by PVD (physical vapour deposition) titanium-nitride coating on stainless steel or by machining from solid brass. PVD gold is hard, corrosion resistant and does not tarnish; solid brass gives a warmer tone that patinates. Both are supplied with stem, poly-sleeve or 3M self-adhesive fixing. In some markets the same product is called a warning button, tactile button or tactile dome; the terms are interchangeable.

Overview
Gold finish tactile studs let a project satisfy accessibility rules without compromising a luxury interior. MetalX offers two routes to a gold colour. PVD gold on stainless steel deposits a thin, extremely hard titanium-nitride layer that bonds to the steel; the result resists scratching, cleaning chemicals and coastal air, and never tarnishes. Solid brass gives a deeper, warmer colour that slowly develops a patina and suits heritage and classical interiors.
Both are machined to the same Ø35 mm, 4.5 mm profile as the rest of our stud range and are available with concentric ring tops for grip or carborundum inserts for the highest wet slip resistance.

How PVD gold is made and why it lasts
PVD stands for physical vapour deposition. The polished stainless steel stud is placed in a vacuum chamber, titanium is vaporised and reacts with nitrogen, and a titanium-nitride layer a few microns thick bonds to the steel. The layer is harder than the steel underneath, which is why the same process is used on watches, taps and door hardware that are handled every day. There is no paint or plating to chip, and because the base is stainless steel the stud has the same corrosion resistance as any SS 304 or SS 316 stud. Varying the process gives bright gold, rose gold or champagne.

Contrast on pale floors
Gold on cream marble is the classic luxury pairing and also the classic contrast problem: the luminance difference can be too small for an access audit. The usual answers are a black carborundum insert in the top of each stud, a darker border of paving around the field, or rose gold or champagne shades, which read darker than bright gold. We can send samples to lay on the actual floor before the order is placed.
Fixing and quantities
Stem into epoxy for new stone floors; poly sleeve for speed on concrete; 3M self-adhesive to retrofit finished marble without drilling. Studs sit on the same 50 mm grid as the rest of our range: 400 per square metre and 240 per running metre of a 600 mm field. Matching PVD gold strips and brass strips and tiles are available so the whole system is one colour.
What affects the price
- Route to gold: PVD coating is a process added to a stainless steel stud; solid brass is a dearer bar. The two end up in a similar price band, above plain stainless steel.
- Base grade: PVD on SS 316 costs more than on SS 304.
- Top pattern: concentric ring is the base; carborundum insert adds an operation.
- Fixing, quantity and destination.
Mistakes we see with gold finish studs
- Solid brass outdoors. It tarnishes; use PVD gold on SS 316.
- Abrasive pads on PVD. The coating is hard but scouring pads dull the polish beneath the sheen; use neutral cleaners and soft pads.
- No contrast check on cream marble. Specify carborundum inserts or a contrasting border.
- Bright gold studs with brass strips. The shades differ; order studs and strips in the same finish.
- Handling PVD studs with bare hands before installation. Fingerprints are harmless but slow to clean; wear gloves.

Install as for stainless steel or brass studs: template, drill, epoxy and press, or peel-and-stick on clean smooth floors. Handle PVD studs with clean gloves and use a rubber mallet; protect all gold finishes from mortar and acidic cleaners during construction.

Frequently asked questions about gold finish tactile studs
Is the gold finish a paint?
No. PVD gold is a titanium-nitride layer bonded to the stainless steel by vapour deposition; it is harder than the steel itself. Solid brass studs are gold-coloured because the metal is brass throughout.
Will the gold finish wear off?
PVD coatings are extremely hard and are routinely used on watches, taps and architectural hardware; on floor studs they last for many years under normal traffic. Solid brass cannot wear off but will patinate.
Can gold finish studs be used outdoors?
PVD gold on SS 316 is suitable for exteriors, including coastal sites. Solid brass is best kept to covered or indoor locations.
What shades of gold are available?

Is PVD gold the same as gold plating?
No. Gold plating is a soft layer of metal that wears through. PVD deposits a titanium-nitride ceramic layer that is harder than the stainless steel beneath it, so the colour survives years of foot traffic.

Can gold finish studs pass a contrast audit on cream marble?
