Self-adhesive tactile directional strips in stainless steel, brass and aluminium

What they are: Self-adhesive tactile strips are directional bars, 280 mm long, 35 mm wide and 4.5 mm high, with 3M double-sided acrylic foam tape on the underside. They are pressed onto a clean, smooth floor at 75 mm centres to form a guiding path with no drilling, dust or downtime. MetalX makes them in stainless steel, brass, aluminium and polyurethane.

Overview

A guiding path through a busy concourse can involve several hundred bars. With stem-fixed strips that means three drilled holes per bar; with self-adhesive strips it means none. MetalX self-adhesive tactile strips let facility teams add or re-route tactile paths in operating stations, hospitals and malls during off-peak hours, without noise, dust or floor closures.

The bars are identical to our stem-fixed stainless steel tactile strips except for the base, which is machined flat and fitted with die-cut 3M acrylic foam tape. The tape tolerates floor cleaning chemicals, trolley traffic and temperature cycling; on suitable substrates the bond is permanent.

Material and finish options

  • Stainless steel: linear, diamond, carborundum and poly-insert tops, plus PVD colours. The most durable option.
  • Brass: natural gold colour for hotels, heritage and premium retail; see brass tactile strips.

Surface preparation is the whole job

Adhesive strips fail only when the floor is dirty, dusty, damp or porous. Wipe each bar position with isopropyl alcohol, let it flash off, and press each bar firmly for five seconds. Porous stone should be sealed first. Where a floor is doubtful, we can supply strips with both tape and stems so the installer can add epoxy at critical points.

Why strips benefit even more from adhesive than studs

A stem-fixed strip needs three drilled holes; a stem-fixed stud needs one. Per metre of guiding path that is about forty holes, each of which must be drilled, cleaned, filled with epoxy and left to cure. The same metre of self-adhesive strips is thirteen wipes and thirteen presses. On long concourse paths the labour saving is larger than on any other tactile product, and there is no cure time before the concourse reopens.

Lippage matters more for a 280 mm bar than for a 35 mm stud. If adjacent tiles differ in height by more than 2 mm, shift the path so the bar sits on one tile, or use stem-fixed bars at that point.

Choosing the material and pattern

Stainless steel with a linear top is the default for stations, hospitals and offices; diamond knurl for wetter areas; carborundum insert for the wettest, busiest routes; coloured poly insert or PVD where the floor is grey and contrast is needed. Brass suits hotels and heritage interiors, aluminium suits large budget-driven areas, and PU in six colours gives the strongest contrast at the lowest cost. All are the same 280 × 35 × 4.5 mm bar, so a path can change material at a doorway without changing feel.

How many strips, and how fast

A 300 mm path takes four bars across at 75 mm centres, about 13.3 bars per metre. Two people install 150–200 self-adhesive bars an hour on prepared tile, roughly 12–15 metres of path per hour including setting out. A 100 m hospital route is a day’s work. Every turn, junction and destination still needs a warning field of studs; self-adhesive studs use the same tape and the same height.

What affects the price

  1. Material: PU, then aluminium, stainless steel, brass.
  2. Pattern and finish: linear is the base; carborundum, poly insert and PVD add operations.
  3. Length and ends: non-standard lengths and square ends are made to order.
  4. Quantity and destination: volume pricing from a few hundred metres.

Mistakes we see with self-adhesive strips

  • Pressing only the middle of the bar. Press from one end to the other so no air is trapped, then press the ends again.
  • A bar bridging a grout joint or lippage. Move the layout; a rocking bar will lift.
  • No alcohol wipe. Residue from floor polish is invisible and stops the bond.
  • Path laid before final floor cleaning. Install after the builders’ clean, not before.
  • Missing warning squares at turns. Every change of direction needs a stud field.

Installation

Snap a chalk line along the path centreline. Clean each bar position with isopropyl alcohol. Place the alignment template on the line, peel the liner from a bar, drop it into the template slot and press firmly for five seconds, working from one end. Move the template along and repeat. Avoid wet cleaning for 24 hours; the bond reaches full strength in 72 hours.

Compliance and standards

The bar geometry (35 mm wide, 4.5 mm high, 75 mm centres) aligns with AS/NZS 1428.4.1 directional indicators and ISO 23599 guiding patterns, and suits the guidance-path surfaces described in BS 8300-1 and the Indian Harmonised Guidelines 2021. Standards govern the surface profile and contrast, not the fixing method, so adhesive installation is acceptable where the substrate is suitable.

Frequently asked questions about self-adhesive tactile strips

Where can self-adhesive tactile strips be installed?

On any clean, smooth, dense floor: vitrified and ceramic tile, polished granite and marble, terrazzo, epoxy and sealed concrete, and metal. Avoid dusty or unsealed concrete, carpet and rough paving, where stem-fixed strips are the right choice.

How long do self-adhesive tactile strips last?

On suitable substrates the 3M acrylic tape bond is permanent and the stainless steel bar will outlast the floor finish. Installations we supplied more than ten years ago remain in service in Indian metro stations and malls.

Can I get the strips in colour for contrast?

Yes. Choose coloured polyurethane inserts, PVD colour coatings on stainless steel, anodised aluminium or solid-colour PU strips in grey, red, yellow, black, blue or terracotta.

What spacing should the strips have?

Lay bars parallel to the direction of travel at 75 mm centre-to-centre, giving four bars across a 300 mm-wide path. Our fibreboard template is pre-cut to this spacing.

What is the price of self-adhesive tactile strips?

It depends on material, pattern, finish, length, quantity and destination. PU is the lowest cost and brass the highest. Send a plan or metre count for a firm quotation.

Can self-adhesive strips go over floor tile grout joints?

Avoid it. Shift the path a few millimetres so each bar sits on solid tile; a bar bridging a recessed joint can rock and lift.

Do self-adhesive strips work on raised access floors?

Yes. Metal and composite raised-floor panels give an excellent bond, and no drilling into the panel or void is needed.
