What they are: Stainless steel tactile strips (directional indicators) are elongated raised bars, 280 mm long, 35 mm wide and 4.5 mm high, laid parallel to the direction of travel at 75 mm centres. They tell a cane or foot user “follow this line”, in contrast to warning studs which mean “stop and check”. MetalX supplies them with stems for drill-and-fix installation, 3M self-adhesive backing, or screw fixings for carpet.

Overview

Directional tactile strips create a continuous guiding path from a building entrance to a ticket counter, lift, platform or crossing point. Because each strip is a discrete component, the path can follow any route and can be installed into existing granite, marble, vitrified tile or concrete without breaking out the floor. MetalX Engineering Inc. manufactures these strips from stainless steel bar and sheet at its Mumbai works and has supplied guiding paths for metro concourses, airports, hospitals and smart-city footpaths across India, the Gulf and Europe.

The standard bar is 280 mm long with rounded ends, 35 mm wide and 4.5 mm high, with a 270 mm patterned top. Three stems on the underside anchor it into drilled holes. Square-ended versions allow bars to butt together for a continuous line, and self-adhesive versions remove the need for drilling entirely.

Choosing a top pattern

  • Linear grooves: the default finish; grooves run along the bar to reinforce the directional message and shed water.
  • Diamond / knurled: maximum grip for exterior plazas and ramps.
  • Carborundum insert: silicon-carbide strip bonded in a channel for the highest wet slip resistance, common in transport terminals.
  • Coloured poly insert: polyurethane insert in yellow, red, blue, black or grey for luminance contrast on grey stone.
  • PVD coating: gold, rose gold, black or bronze finish on the whole bar for premium interiors.

Why stainless steel for guiding paths

Guiding paths are long and highly visible, so material choice affects both the maintenance budget and the look of the building. Stainless steel does not fade, chip or delaminate, cleans with ordinary floor equipment, and keeps its profile under trolley and luggage traffic for decades. Compare it with brass strips for warm-toned interiors, aluminium strips for lightweight budget projects, or PU strips for colour and low cost.

What a directional strip does that a stud cannot

A stud field says stop. A line of bars says keep going, this way. In a large open concourse with no wall to trail a hand along, a guiding path made of stainless steel strips is the only way a cane user can cross the space confidently. The bars are laid parallel to the direction of travel; the cane rides along the grooves between them and the foot feels the ridges. Where the path turns, branches or reaches a counter, lift or stair, it ends in a square of warning studs so the user knows a decision is needed.

Because the path is long and continuous, strips are the most visible tactile element in a building. That is why the material and finish matter more here than anywhere else: a guiding path in the wrong colour or the wrong grade is noticed by every visitor, every day.

Rounded or square ends?

Our standard bar has rounded ends and a 270 mm patterned length on a 280 mm bar. Laid end to end with a small gap it reads clearly under a cane and looks tidy in stone. Square-ended bars butt together for an unbroken line, which some transit agencies prefer on long straight runs. Both ends are available in every pattern; ask for a sample of each before deciding.

How many strips do you need?

A standard guiding path is 300 mm wide and uses four bars across at 75 mm centres. With a 280 mm bar and a 20 mm gap, each 300 mm of path takes four bars, so a metre of path needs about 13.3 bars. A 600 mm-wide path in a large concourse needs eight bars across, about 26.7 per metre. Every turn and junction needs a warning field of studs, typically 600 × 600 mm (144 studs). If you send a plan, we will lay out the route, count the bars and studs and note where warning squares are needed.

What affects the price

  1. Grade: SS 316 bar costs more than SS 304.
  2. Pattern: linear and plain are the base; diamond knurl, carborundum and poly inserts add operations; PVD coating adds a process.
  3. Ends and length: square ends and non-standard lengths are made to order.
  4. Fixing: self-adhesive backing adds a little per bar and saves a great deal on labour.
  5. Quantity and destination: volume pricing from a few hundred metres; freight quoted by air or sea.

Bars are packed 100 or 200 to a carton with the alignment template. Standard linear-pattern bars ship from stock in Mumbai.

Mistakes we see on guiding paths

  • Path runs into a wall or column. Keep at least 30 mm clearance from walls and 600 mm from obstacles where the plan allows.
  • Path ends without a warning square. Every turn, junction and destination needs a field of studs.
  • Bars across the direction of travel. Bars must run parallel to the route; across it they read as a corduroy hazard warning in some countries.
  • Bars not parallel. Use the template and a string line; a wandering path is obvious for the life of the floor.
  • Bright steel on grey granite with no contrast. Specify poly inserts, carborundum or PVD where the floor is grey.

Installation

Set out the path centreline, then use the fibreboard template to mark three holes per bar at 75 mm bar centres. Drill, clean, fill with epoxy anchoring adhesive and press the bars in, checking alignment with a straight edge before the adhesive sets. Self-adhesive bars are applied to a clean, dry floor after priming porous surfaces. Leave a gap of at least 30 mm between the guiding path and any wall or obstruction.

Compliance and standards

Directional bars 35 mm wide and 4.5 mm high at 75 mm centres match the guiding TGSI geometry in AS/NZS 1428.4.1:2009 and fall within ISO 23599:2019. The UK DfT guidance and BS 8300-1:2018 describe an equivalent guidance-path surface, and the Indian Harmonised Guidelines (2021) require guiding blocks to lead from entrances to key facilities. The ADA does not mandate directional indicators, but many US transit agencies specify them; we supply to the agency drawing.

What is the difference between tactile strips and tactile studs?

Strips (directional indicators) are elongated bars laid parallel to the direction of travel and mean “follow this route”. Studs (warning indicators) are round domes laid in a grid and mean “stop, hazard or decision point ahead”. Most projects use both: strips lead to a hazard, and a field of studs marks it.

What size are stainless steel tactile strips?

The MetalX standard strip is 280 mm long, 35 mm wide and 4.5 mm high, with rounded ends and a 270 mm patterned top. Bars are installed at 75 mm centres, four bars across a 300 mm path. Square-ended and custom-length bars are available.

How far apart are tactile directional strips installed?

Bars are set at 75 mm centre-to-centre spacing, which gives a 40 mm gap between 35 mm bars. A standard guiding path is 300 mm wide (4 bars); wider paths of 600 mm are used in large concourses.

Can the strips be installed on existing marble or granite?

Yes. Stem-type strips are set in drilled holes with epoxy, and self-adhesive strips need no drilling at all. Both are routinely used to retrofit guiding paths in operating stations and malls without closing the floor.

Do you supply strips with coloured inserts for contrast?

Yes. Coloured polyurethane inserts (yellow, red, blue, black, grey) and PVD colour coatings provide the luminance contrast that AS/NZS 1428.4.1, BS 8300 and the Indian guidelines expect between the indicator and the surrounding floor.

Which stainless steel grade do you recommend for outdoor footpaths?

SS 304 is adequate for most inland footpaths. Use SS 316 for coastal cities, marine terminals and any site where de-icing salt or chemical cleaners are used.

How many tactile strips are needed per metre of guiding path?

About 13.3 bars per metre for a standard 300 mm-wide path (four bars across at 75 mm centres, 280 mm bars with 20 mm gaps). A 600 mm-wide path needs about 26.7 bars per metre.

What is the price of stainless steel tactile strips?

It depends on grade, top pattern, end profile, fixing type, quantity and destination. Linear-pattern SS 304 bars with stems are the base price; SS 316, carborundum inserts and PVD coating cost more. Send a plan or metre count for a quotation.

Should the bars run along or across the walking direction?

Along it. Directional bars are laid parallel to the route so the cane and foot follow the grooves. Bars laid across the route can be mistaken for a hazard warning.

How long do stainless steel strips last?

Solid stainless steel bars typically outlast the surrounding floor. Guiding paths we supplied more than fifteen years ago remain in service in Indian stations with no maintenance beyond cleaning.
