Infrastructure projects of the last decade look different from those of the 1990s. Floors are large-format porcelain or thin stone on screed; offices sit on raised access floors full of cabling; stations open in phases and layouts change after opening. Each of those trends makes drilled fixings harder and adhesive fixings more attractive. Here is how self-adhesive tactile strips fit modern construction.

Large-format and thin floor finishes

A 1200 × 600 mm porcelain tile 10 mm thick is expensive and easy to crack near a drilled hole. Thin stone on adhesive beds behaves the same way. Self-adhesive tactile strips bond to the surface and put no stress into the tile, so the floor finish is never compromised and there are no replacement tiles to source.

Raised floors and services in the slab

Raised access floors carry power and data; post-tensioned slabs and screeds carry heating pipes and conduits. Drilling into either is a risk that many clients simply prohibit. Adhesive strips need no penetration, and on metal raised-floor panels the bond is excellent.

Phased openings

Stations, terminals and campuses open in phases, and the tactile route often has to change as later phases come online. Self-adhesive strips can be added in an afternoon and, if a route is superseded, removed with heat and a residue cleaner without scarring the floor.

Design changes after handover

Retail tenancies move, counters are relocated, lifts are added. Each change may need the guiding path re-routed. With drilled strips that means filled holes visible forever; with adhesive strips it means a clean floor and a new line.

Speed on large areas

Airport and metro concourses contain kilometres of guiding path. At 150–200 strips per hour for a two-person crew, adhesive installation lets the tactile package keep pace with the flooring programme rather than trailing it.

What does not change

The strip itself is the same 280 × 35 × 4.5 mm solid bar as the stem-fixed version, in stainless steel, brass, aluminium or PU, so compliance with AS/NZS 1428.4.1, ISO 23599 or local guidelines is unaffected. The only requirement is a smooth, dense, clean floor between 10 °C and 40 °C during installation.

Where drilling is still right

Exterior pavements, rough concrete, carpet and areas with standing water still call for stem-fixed strips in epoxy. Most modern projects use both: adhesive inside, epoxy outside, one profile throughout.

Yes. The metal or composite panels give an excellent bond, and no drilling into the panel or void is needed.

Will adhesive strips crack large-format porcelain tiles?

Yes. Warm each strip with a heat gun, lift it, clean the residue and install the new route.
