Stainless steel (SS 304 and SS 316)
Routine: mop or scrub with a neutral (pH 6–8) floor cleaner. Machine scrubbers with soft or medium pads are fine. Avoid: chloride-based cleaners and bleach left in contact, which can cause tea-staining even on 304; steel wool, which leaves iron particles that rust. If staining appears, a mild stainless steel cleaner or a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water removes it.
Brass
Routine: neutral cleaner and normal machine cleaning; a soft lustre develops and is usually welcome. Avoid: acidic tile cleaners, which strip the surface, and abrasive pads. To restore a bright finish, use a brass polish and then, if wanted, a clear lacquer. Lacquered brass should be cleaned only with neutral products; re-lacquer when the crown wears.
PVD colour coatings (gold, rose gold, black, bronze)
Routine: neutral cleaner, soft pads. The coating is harder than steel and does not chip, but scouring pads can dull the polished base beneath, which shows as a change in sheen. Avoid abrasive powders and hydrofluoric-acid descalers.
Aluminium (natural and anodised)
Routine: neutral cleaner. Avoid: strongly alkaline degreasers and acidic cleaners, both of which dull anodising. Use a rubber mallet, not a hammer, for any re-seating.
Polyurethane (PU)
Routine: any normal floor cleaner; PU tolerates alkaline and mild acidic products. Avoid: solvents such as acetone or thinners, and floor polishes, which build up in the grooves. High-pressure washing is fine in exterior covered areas.
Porcelain tiles
Treat as the surrounding floor tile. Keep grout lines clean so the dome grid stays crisp.
Inspection
Walk every field and path twice a year and after any works nearby (floor grinding, tiling, trench works). Look for missing, loose, rocking or worn pieces, proud screws on tiles, and build-up of polish or grime in patterns. A single missing stud in a platform-edge field is a defect an auditor will record.
Replacing a damaged piece
- Stem-fixed stud or bar: cut the piece flush with a grinder, drill the stem out or drill a fresh hole beside it within the grid, clean, epoxy and set the new piece.
- Self-adhesive stud or bar: warm with a heat gun, lift with a blade, clean the residue with isopropyl alcohol, then peel and press the new piece.
- Screw-fix stud: unscrew, replace, screw down.
- Tile: remove the four screws, lift, scrape the adhesive, fit a new tile.
