Accessibility requirements under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, the Harmonised Guidelines and Standards for Universal Accessibility in India (2021) and metro and railway specifications have created a large market for tactile ground surface indicators in India. Many suppliers have appeared; fewer actually manufacture. Use these eight criteria to choose one that can deliver a compliant project on time.
Ask to see the factory, or at least production photographs and videos. A manufacturer machines, presses or moulds the product and controls dimensions, finish and lead time. MetalX Engineering Inc. has manufactured tactile indicators at its Mumbai factory for over three decades.
Stainless steel should be supplied with mill test certificates confirming AISI 304 or 316 composition. Brass and aluminium should be identified by alloy. Polyurethane should have a compound data sheet. A supplier who cannot provide these is buying from unknown sources.
The manufacturer should be able to explain the differences between ISO 23599, AS/NZS 1428.4.1, ADA §705, BS 8300-1 and the Indian Harmonised Guidelines, and hold tooling for each dome profile. Indian metro tenders frequently reference DMRC drawings; airports may reference ISO or ADA. One profile does not suit all.
A project usually needs stainless steel on platform edges and entrances, PU or aluminium indoors, and perhaps brass in a premium lobby. If all of these come from one manufacturer with the same Ø35 mm, 4.5 mm, 50 mm-grid geometry, the tactile experience is consistent and the supply chain is simple. Unit price differences between suppliers are small compared with the cost of a rejected batch, a missed handover date or studs that loosen in the first monsoon. Evaluate the criteria above first, then compare quotations on a like-for-like specification.
