Tactile warning studs do one job: they tell a person who cannot see the floor that a hazard or decision point is ahead. Any material that holds a compliant dome shape can do that on day one. The question for a specifier is which material will still be doing it, without complaint from the facility manager, in ten years. For most projects the choice comes down to polyurethane (PU) or stainless steel, and the right answer depends on six practical factors.
What both materials have in common

Six factors that decide the material
1. Indoor or outdoor
Stainless steel is unaffected by rain, UV, freeze-thaw cycles and de-icing salt (choose SS 316 for coastal sites). PU is UV-stabilised and performs well in covered and semi-covered areas, but on fully exposed pavements with vehicle over-run, stainless steel is the safer specification.
2. Footfall and trolley traffic
Platform edges, airport concourses and mall entrances see tens of thousands of crossings a day plus luggage trolleys and cleaning machines. Solid stainless steel studs shrug that off. PU studs handle normal pedestrian traffic for years, but in the heaviest zones they may need occasional replacement, which is quick because each stud is independent.
3. Floor finish
On polished stone, vitrified tile and terrazzo, both materials bond well with 3M adhesive. On carpet and timber, stainless steel screw-fix studs are the practical option. On vinyl, PU self-adhesive studs are quiet and flexible enough to follow slight movement.
4. Visual contrast
Standards such as AS/NZS 1428.4.1 and BS 8300-1 require luminance contrast between the stud and the floor. PU is coloured through the body in six colours, so contrast is easy. Stainless steel achieves contrast with PVD colour coating, coloured poly inserts or a contrasting surround.
5. Budget
PU studs typically cost about one-third of stainless steel and weigh far less, which lowers freight. For a school with 5,000 studs the difference is significant. For a metro station, the lifetime cost of stainless steel is usually lower because nothing is ever replaced.
6. Maintenance plan
If the building has a facilities team that can swap a damaged stud, PU is low risk. If the site is remote or access is difficult (a live platform edge, for example), stainless steel's near-zero maintenance is worth the premium.

Which is more slip resistant, PU or stainless steel studs?
PU has a naturally high coefficient of friction and is excellent on smooth indoor floors. Stainless steel studs rely on their machined concentric ring or diamond pattern; the carborundum-insert version gives the highest wet slip resistance of any stud we make.
Do stainless steel studs rust outdoors?
SS 304 resists rust in normal outdoor conditions; SS 316 is specified for coastal, marine and de-icing-salt environments. Neither needs a coating.
How long do PU tactile studs last?
In interior and covered locations with normal traffic they last many years without visible wear. In the very heaviest zones occasional replacement of individual studs may be needed.
