Polyurethane is often assumed to be the budget option for quiet corridors. In practice, some of its properties make it well suited to busy indoor spaces, provided the location is chosen sensibly. Here is what the material brings to a high-traffic floor, and where its limits are.

Impact absorption

A trolley wheel hitting a rigid stud transfers the whole shock into the fixing. Over years this is what loosens studs and cracks tile around them. PU tactile studs deform slightly and recover, spreading the load and protecting both the stud and the floor. In malls and hospitals with constant trolley traffic this reduces the number of loose or missing studs the facilities team has to deal with.

Colour that cannot wear off

MetalX moulds PU studs in six colours through the full body of the stud. Painted or coated indicators lose their colour on the crown first, exactly where wear is highest, and then fail the contrast requirement. A yellow PU stud scuffed by ten years of footfall is still yellow.

Slip resistance

Polyurethane has a high coefficient of friction wet and dry, and the concentric ring pattern adds mechanical grip. On polished stone and vitrified tile, which are themselves slippery when wet, PU studs are often the safest option.

Silence

A white cane sweeping across metal studs makes a distinct clicking sound. In hospitals, libraries and offices, users and facility managers often prefer the quiet response of polyurethane.

Fast replacement

When a stud is damaged, a stem-fixed PU stud can be cut flush, drilled out and replaced; a self-adhesive stud is warmed, lifted and replaced. Either job takes minutes and needs no closure.

Weight and logistics

A carton of 500 PU studs weighs a few kilograms. For large projects and export orders this reduces freight and makes site handling easier.

Where PU is not the right answer

Open exterior pavements with vehicle over-run, metro platform edges and coastal sites exposed to salt spray are stainless steel territory. Our stainless steel tactile studs share the same Ø35 mm, 4.5 mm profile, so the two can be combined: stainless steel at the entrance, PU inside.
