Stainless Steel Tactile Strips Manufacturer: What to Look for Before Ordering

Stainless steel tactile directional strips with stems, self-adhesive backing and poly inserts

Key takeaways

  • Confirm AISI 304 or 316 with a mill certificate and solid machined construction.
  • Check 280 × 35 × 4.5 mm dimensions, rounded or square ends and 75 mm spacing against your standard.
  • Choose the top pattern for the environment: linear for interiors, diamond or carborundum for wet exteriors, poly insert or PVD for contrast.
  • Ask about stems, poly sleeves, 3M adhesive and screw-fix, and whether templates and samples are provided.

Stainless steel tactile strips are a long-term component: once a guiding path is set into a floor it stays for the life of the building. The order therefore deserves a few checks before it is placed. Here is what MetalX recommends buyers verify with any manufacturer, including us.

1. Grade and certification

Ask for AISI 304 or 316 and a mill test certificate. Bright “stainless” bars of unknown grade can be 201 or 430, which stain and pit outdoors. For coastal or salted sites insist on 316.

2. Construction

A machined solid bar holds its pattern and cannot be crushed. Hollow or folded-sheet bars are lighter and cheaper but dent under trolleys. MetalX strips are machined from solid bar in Mumbai.

3. Dimensions and end profile

The MetalX standard is 280 mm long, 35 mm wide and 4.5 mm high with rounded ends and a 270 mm patterned top, installed at 75 mm centres. Square-ended bars butt together for continuous lines. Check these against your governing standard: AS/NZS 1428.4.1 (35 mm bars at 75 mm centres) or ISO 23599 (17–30 mm top width, 57–78 mm spacing).

4. Top pattern

  • Linear grooves: the standard interior finish.
  • Diamond knurl: for wet exteriors and ramps.
  • Carborundum insert: highest wet slip resistance; transport terminals.
  • Coloured poly insert: contrast on pale floors.
  • PVD coating: gold, rose gold, black or bronze finish.

5. Fixing options

Three stems per bar for drill-and-fix in epoxy, with or without poly sleeves; 3M self-adhesive for smooth interior floors; screw-fix for carpet. A manufacturer that offers all of these can support every floor on the project.

6. Templates and instructions

A fibreboard template for 75 mm centres saves hours of measuring and prevents crooked paths. MetalX includes one with every order, along with installation instructions.

7. Samples

Request a sample bar in the chosen grade and pattern. Test adhesion on your actual floor if using the self-adhesive type, and check the contrast visually.

8. Stock and lead time

Standard bars should ship from stock. MetalX holds standard types in Mumbai, makes non-stock items in 3–4 days and delivers urgent orders worldwide within 7 days.

9. Export documentation

For overseas projects, confirm the manufacturer handles export packing, invoices, certificates of origin and freight. MetalX is a Government of India recognised Export House and has supplied strips to the USA, UK, Canada, Germany, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar.

10. Matching studs and tiles

Guiding paths end at warning fields. Buy strips, studs and tiles from one manufacturer so the height, finish and grade match across the project.

Frequently asked questions

What length are stainless steel tactile strips?

The MetalX standard is 280 mm with rounded ends (270 mm patterned). 300 mm and custom lengths, and square-ended bars, are available.

How do I verify the stainless steel grade?

Ask for a mill test certificate showing AISI 304 or 316 composition. A magnet test is not reliable because machining can make austenitic steel slightly magnetic.

Which top pattern is best for an outdoor ramp?

Diamond knurl or carborundum insert for maximum wet slip resistance.

Do you provide installation templates?

Yes. A fibreboard alignment template for 75 mm bar centres is supplied with every order.
